If you discover a fire:
- Leave the fire area immediately, closing all doors behind you.
- Activate the building's fire alarm system using the closest fire alarm pull standard
- Fight the fire only if you are confident that it may be controlled with the fire fighting equipment available and you know how to use if properly.
- Evacuate using the closest exit and proceed outdoors.
- Ensure that the Fire Department has been notified by calling 9-1-1 giving the building address and apartment number if applicable/known, your name and telephone number.
If you hear the building fire alarm:
- Leave the building using the closest exit; ensuring you close the doors behind you.
- However, before opening your apartment door, test the door and knob for heat.
- If the door is hot, remain in your apartment.
- if the door is cool to the touch, open it slightly and check the corridor for smoke. If the corridor is clear proceed to the closest exit. If you find that your exit is impassable, try an alternate exit. If all exits are impassable, return to you apartment.
- If you must remain in your suite, place damp towels around the door frame to prevent smoke from entering your apartment.
- If smoke enters the suite or you need assistance, call the Fire Department by calling 9-1-1 and let them know where you are and proceed to an accessible window. Signal the Fire Department by waving a sheet or towel. If no accessible window, got to the most smoke free room, close the door behind you and seal it with tape or towel. Open the window for fresh air.
